Snow fun at Sunpeaks

Posted in Canada at 10:31 pm by AB

A few months ago i was invited by Jackie Muir (who organised the Haney to Harrison Relay Team I participated in) to join her and others at their annual weekend trip to Sunpeaks Resort. Naturally I didn’t have think for too long about that.

Sunpeaks is just outside the town of Kamloops which is about 350km from Vancouver in the British Columbia Interior.

We arrived into the village at about 11pm at night after the 4 and a bit hour drive, which included driving on a two lane highway which had been reduced to one lane in each direction at parts as the snow had banked up on both sides making it feel like we were driving through a snow canyon. After a beer it was time to head to bed and ready myself for the next day.

Friday was a great day of skiing and I have managed to improve my skiing a bit. Working on a few pointers that Karl gave me up at Whistler has helped me and I have managed to get down quite a few of the groomed black diamond runs with out to many problems. Harder ungroomed runs and real deep powder still give me a few problems, but i am working on it. Everybody had to contribute to dinner either Friday or Saturday night. I made a curry in my crockpot which was part of Friday nights dinner.

Saturday was probably the best days skiing that i have ever had. I was up early and was waiting at the bottom of one of the chairlifts before it opened. I was second in line behind a group of three. It was snowed during the night and had added a fresh layer on the slopes. As we got to the top the group of three went left so i went right. It was fresh snow all the way down and i got to put the first tracks into the fresh snow, so that was awesome. It was almost perfect conditions for someone who skis as badly as I do. It was very quiet on the side of the resort i was on so i had 3-4 runs like that, after it was harder to lay fresh tracks. Not long after that it began to snow which kept the snow nice all day. I ended up taking the last lift of the day so skied right through from open till close. Needless to say i was wrecked and just managed to last till the end of the hockey, before it was time to crash.

A fun weekend was had and a few drinks enjoyed along the way as all. Photos from Sunpeaks can be found in the gallery.

Cheers.

Hey Buddy! Just reading through your update! My brother is arriving in Vancouver on or around about the 3rd of March, so I’ll pass on yr cell number and see if you guys can’t catch up for a beer or two. A word of warning he is a Magpies supporter but don’t hold that against him!

    Take it easy!
